Today, with fast development of networking technologies, using network devices for simple data transfer is no longer a problem. But as services like voice and video are integrating into data communications networks, users are expecting network devices (routers, switches, and so on) to do more. Some of the expectations are:

The idea is to create a win-win situation by allowing third-party vendors to develop services as needed on the architecture. This architecture is called open application architecture (OAA).

Agent Requirements: OAA delivers a full set of standard software and hardware interfaces based on legacy routers and switches. Developing software and hardware with these interfaces, any vendor can bring all components together into a powerful system. This is like what has happened in the PC industry where a PC can accommodate software and hardware from different vendors because the same industrial standards are followed. This allows for great flexibility and creates more value for costumers.
Underpinning the OAA architecture is years of experience of H3C in routing and switching technologies. OAA has applied to the new generation of H3C routers and switches, allowing them to accommodate cards and modules designed by any vendor following the OAA standards to provide more services. In addition, H3C has developed a wide range of cards for customers to provide services like voice and firewall.
In the hardware structure, OAA consists of the routing and switching component, independent service component and interface connection component.
Among these components, the routing and switching component is the major part of a router or switch. It provides complete routing and switching functions and is the core for user management and control. The independent service component is open to third parties for collaborative development. These two components are interfaced together by the interface connection component. Thus, utilities of different vendors are brought together to create a seamlessly integrated product.
The high speed Ethernet interfaces allow the transfer of service packets between the router and the independent service component. The asynchronous serial interface provides an independent console channel, through which, a user can log into the system of the independent service component for configuration and management. From the user's perspective, the different parts are a single device.
Cooperation Patterns for Third Parties
OAA provides multiple patterns for a third party to cooperate with H3C.
- The third party designs the interface board in compliance with OAA and provides the application software system running on the board. This pattern requires the third party to have both software and hardware development capabilities.
- The third party designs as an independent daughter card in compliance with OAA and provides the application software system running on the card. This pattern is suitable for providing service support on a high-end switching device, where developing a high speed card is much harder than developing a daughter card. H3C can provide the high-end switching device and the motherboard of the interface board. The third party only needs to develop the daughter card to offer value-added services for customers.
- H3C provides all the hardware systems. The third party provides the independent software system compliant with OAA. This pattern is suitable for software vendors capable of developing device drivers rather than hardware systems. The third party can concentrate on offering value-added applications through their specialized software, without caring about the design of the specific hardware systems.
- H3C provides all the hardware systems, the OS (for instance, Linux) and the driver interface. The third party just needs to run its software in the open Linux environment. This pattern only requires that the third party be capable of developing application software.
H3C has defined a set of software/hardware interfaces specifications, which clearly define and describe the above-mentioned interfaces. Vendors that want to join the OAA architecture can select any of the above-mentioned cooperation patterns to take part in the building of the OAA architecture to offer better services.
